We use this timeline component to tell the Relume story, but we think it can be used to communicate a process, a product roadmap, a company’s history or a story.
Relume was started by two guys with the same mission.
Our story starts 8 years ago... Strap in.
After having a passion for IT in school and gaining my D2 GCSE qualification, I straight away entered the world of IT at Solihull College. The ‘BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT’ course was where my interest for design began...and it was only getting started.
2 years later and I've achieved the best grade possible: a Distinction* Distinction* Distinction* (D*D*D*). This course further introduced me into the world of design. It started with web design, branched out to game design, followed on with graphic design and lead me down a path of event-driven programming. My passion for design was amplified, which lead me to taking on the world of UX.
After earning college qualifications in graphic design, web design, game design and human-computer interaction, I was introduced to the world of UX and UI. In June 2023, directly after college, I decided to join the UX Design Institute on their ‘Professional Diploma in UX Design’ course. A Glasgow Caledonian University credit rated opportunity which would allow me to gain the skills, knowledge and experience within the world of UX - I couldn’t wait.
6 months of Research, Analysis, Design, Prototyping, Validating and Annotations later, I flew through my Hotel Booking App Case Study, passing every assignment first time and achieving an amazing 70% on my final App Prototype. An unhealthy amount of revision later and I’ve taken my exam; achieving an 84% overall score; well over the 60% pass percentage.
I would love to start off with a job title of ‘Junior UX/UI Designer’, so I’m taking the steps to get there. I’ve started using Webflow to create this portfolio to showcase my work, experience and personality. Webflow is a tough tool to master, however luckily for me understanding software and learning the UI and functionality of a tool is something that comes naturally. I’ll also be constantly adding any education, jobs or experiences to my portfolio...forever.
After conquering the features of Webflow and publishing my portfolio (You're looking at it right now), I decided to pledge my loyalty even further with the UX Design Institute and take on their Professional Certificate in UI Design Course. I always had more interest in the UI side of things, so now was the time to pursue that path.
During carrying out the UI Design Course, I was contacted on LinkedIn by a Jigsaw Founder to partake in a design challenge for creating a responsive desktop and mobile website template for Peppa. I took the executive decision to accept, despite preparing for an exam, and ensured to put my multi-tasking skills to use. Over only 4 days I had created a Figma website design template, with a prototype for both mobile and desktop. Competing with many others, I took the 1st place spot, due to producing an intuitive template available for any e-commerce industry business which followed and met all criteria from the challenge's description.
6 months later again...it's like deja vu, it was COMPLETED! This course was a similar process to their UX one but...MORE DESIGN. The UX Design Process was skipped but more thought and knowledge was put into the UI side of things, such as: Typography, Colour, Icons, Components, Grids and more! After taking these factors into careful consideration I finalised with 9 UI Designs for a Banking Application. 3 for Desktop, 3 for Tablet and 3 for Mobile. After submitting them for grading I recieved a pretty (definitley) impressive 84%. However, not only did I ace the design tasks, I then pursed the UI exam. This is where I achieved an overall grade of 90% for the entire course. Could I have done better? Well yes...BUT, I think 90% is pretty impressive for a beginner, don't you? Next, job searching.
